Decatur Review 8/18/1925

Mrs. Bessie Dehner, wife of Clyd E. Dehner, commercial traveler living at 370 W. Marietta street, committed suicide by taking carbolic acid at her home about 3:15 oclock Monday afternoon. She died at the Decatur and Macon County hospital a few minutes after taking the poison. Continued ill health is believed to have caused her to take her life. She would have been forty four years old in September.
Only Mr. and Mrs. Dehner and their two year old nephew were in the house. Mr. Dehner said he went into his wifes room and found her sitting on the bed. She made no reply when he asked her if there was anything he could do for her and when he went and got a pitcher of ice water he closed the door. When he was returning with the ice water he heard her scream and when he reached her she was lying back on the bed with the empty bottle beside her. Mr. Dehner immediately called an ambulance and had her taken to the hospital but she died in a few minutes.
Mrs. Dehner had been in failing health for two years. Her maiden name was Bessie Burkam. She was born in Decatur,Sept. 19, 1881 and had always lived here.
Besides her husband she is survived by her mother, Mrs. Ellen Burkam, three brothers and a sister, Roy and Earl Burkam of Decatur. John Burkam of Findlay, Ohio and Mrs. Ollie Catlin of Decatur.
The body was taken to Dawson & Wikoff undertaking establishment and prepared for burial.
