OLDEST GRAVESTONE IN WINTHROP STREET CEMETERY--Desire Cowing 1723
*******************************
Desire Cowing had two husbands:
Josiah Hatch (married Feb 24,1701/2) & John Cowing Jr (married Jun 19,1719).
*******************************
The oldest cemetery also contains the work of several known carvers. In an article in the Association for Gravestone Studies quarterly newsletter, James Blachowicz identifies the work of three Boston-area carvers in the Winthrop Street cemetery. He lists a dozen stones by William Bennet, two stones carved by John Homer, and one stone by Lemuel Savery, all carved circa 1800. Most of these are classic carvings of winged skulls or angels on slate stones.
