R. Stansell Clement, a former Wellington resident, late of Lamesa, died Thursday, January 18, 2001 in Uvalde Memorial Hospital. He was 93 at the time of his death.

He was born September 27, 1907 to Elmo (Elmer) and Ethel Stansell Clement in Decatur. He graduated from Wellington High School in May 1927; and received an Associate of Arts degree from Wayland Baptist College in 1930 and also attended West Texas College and Tech Tech 1933.

He married Lil Crawford May 21, 1933 in Childress. He taught school in Childress County, holding the position of principal and basketball coach. He also served as the clerk of the district court.

He was admitted to the practice of law by the Supreme Court of Texas in 1936 and served as District Attorney of the 106th Judicial District of Texas in 1959 and 1960 He also served as Special District Judge of that district in 1968. He practiced law for more than 63 years, 58 of which were in Lamesa. he retired in 1999.

Clement served as president of the Lamesa Chamber of Commerce, the Dawson County United Way, the Lamesa Rotary Club and the Lamesa Lions Club. He served on numerous boards with the city of Lamesa and Dawson County.

He had been a board member of the Canadian River Municipal Water District. he was a member of and chairman of the board of deacons at First Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Nellie Sue in 1929 and Inez, January 14, 2001.
