* PVT RICHARD SWIFT *
- Pvt Richard Swift, Died A Prisoner Of War -
Name: Richard Swift
RESIDENCE: Ashe County, North Carolina
Enlistment Date: 20 Jun 1863
Side Served: Confederacy
State Served: Virginia
Service Record: Enlisted as a Private on 20 June 1863.
Enlisted in Company E, 21st Cavalry Regiment Virginia on 20 Jun 1863.
Died of disease, as a POW Company E, 21st Cavalry Regiment Virginia, on 29 Apr 1864, at Rock Island, IL.
* Pvt Richard Swift, born about 1845, most likely, Ashe, or Watauga Co., N.C., was the son of Thomas Swift and Lucinda Greene Swift.
Richard's parents, both born in N.C., were married February 24, 1844, Ashe County, N.C.
A 1860c, Watauga Co., N.C., lists Richard as being in the household of Thomas Swift and Lucinda Swift. At that time, his birth year, would have been about 1845, as his age being 15.
Two of Richards siblings, were brothers, J. Enoch and George W. Swift.
Brother: Enoch Swift
Brother: George W. Swift
Sister: Clarissa Swift - Born in 1850
* Also, in the same census, 1860, a sister, Clarissa Swift, b. about 1850, was listed. She may have later had a son, Richard Davis, age 2, that showed up as living with her parents, in 1870c, Watauga Co., N.C. (could not locate her after the 1860c). The parents of Clarrisa, Thomas and Lucinda Swift, seemed to have raised Richard Davis (grandchild, as stated in a later census), until he was grown, or whatever. As of yet, I have not been able to complete a followup on him.
* As for the burial location of Pvt Richard Swift, it is uncertain.
It appears he had family buried here at the Swift Cemetery, and also, at the Cove Creek Cemetery, both being in Watauga Co., N.C.
