He was born Nov. 24, 1912, in Springfield, the son of Archibald L. and Harriet Ela Bowen. He married Lucille Gerlach Fitzgerald in 1954. A daughter, Mary Ela Bowen, preceded him in death.
Dr. Bowen graduated from Lake Forest Academy and received a B.A. degree from Knox College and his medical degree from the University of Chicago in 1938. He served his internship at the University of Chicago Hospitals and completed his surgical residency at Hines Veterans Hospital. He practiced general surgery in Springfield from 1946 until his retirement in 1980. Dr. Bowen served as a flight surgeon during World War II, achieving the rank of lieutenant colonel.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, American Board of Surgery, American College of Surgeons, Illinois State Medical Society, the American Medical Association and the Sangamo Club. He served on the boards of the St. John's Hospital and Memorial Medical Center and the Chatham Glenwood School district for many years.
Surviving are his wife, Lucille; a daughter, Mrs. Eloise Pearson of Tokyo, Japan; a stepson, Robert Fitzgerald of Tacoma, Wash.; a sister, Mary Stephenson of Springfield, Va.; two grandchildren; and a niece.
