George County was struck with a saddening blow last Saturday morning, when news spread that W.R. (Rich) Goff had died at 1:25 o'clock that morning.
"Rich" as he was affectionately called by everyone who knew him, was struck with heart attack about one o'clock, and lived only a few minutes. He recently had lead the ticket for Sheriff and Tax Collector of George County, lacking only about 80 votes to go in, in the first primary.
Mr. Goff was a native of this country, having been born and reared in George County in the section now known as Central Community, which at that time was a part of Jackson County. He was the son of the late William Henry and Mary Jane Goff.
He was 63 years of age at the time of his death. He has served as a public official for the past 14 years, 10 years of that time as town Marshal, a position that he held at the time of his death. During the other time, he was used as special deputy Sheriff, serving with every sheriff since he moved to Lucedale from Central.
Mr. Goff was a member of the Lucedale Baptist Church, moving his letter here from Shady Grove Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Laura Bell Howell Goff, 7 daughters, Mrs. J.H. Colville, Moss Point; Mrs. T.B. Barber, Escatawpa, Miss.; Mrs. J.A. Smith, Mrs. T.J. Colville, Mrs. Ernest Miller and Misses Neldred Maudine and Mary Lou Goff, all of Lucedale; 3 sons, Fred H. Goff, U.S. Army, Bangar, Maine, and Pfc. Vernice Edwin Goff, U.S. Army, Alaska; 25 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, 2 sisters, Mrs. W.W. Holland, Wade; Mrs. George C. Howell, Lucedale; 3 brothers, James R. Goff and Charles E. Goff, of Lucedale; and Albert H. Goff, of Greenwood, and other relatives, who have the sympathy of their friends during their bereavement.
Funeral services are, as we go to Press, indefinite, waiting for word from Pfc. V.E. Goff, who left Alaska by plane for home on Tuesday of this week. However, funeral services will be held at the Lucedale Baptist Church, with interment in the Shady Grove cemetery.
Pallbearers are H.D. Vise, M.D. Solomon, M.L. Malone, E.B. Ward, Bud Moody and Arthur Eubanks.
