Eleanor Karst, 86, Hoven, died Monday, May 31, 2004, at the Holy Infant Hospital, Hoven. Her Mass of Christian Burial has been scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 4, 2004, at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Hoven, with Father Lance Oser, celebrant. Burial will follow at St. Anthony's Church Cemetery, Hoven.

Organist will be Alice Simon, soloist will be Rolland Reuer, and St. Anthony's Catholic Church Choir will sing. Lectors will be Amy Davis and Denise Pearce. Eucharistic minister will be Linda Feldmeier and mass servers will be Derek Rausch and Sam McCloud. Offertory gift bearers will be Krystal Stuwe, Dawn Stevens, and Darla Morford. Visitation will begin at the church 4 p.m. Thursday, with a 7 p.m. wake service.

Eleanor Baus, daughter of Gertrude (Flock) and William Baus, was born near Hoven on Dec. 3, 1917. She was raised on a farm near Hoven and attended St. Anthony's Parochial School in Hoven. Following her education, she worked as a hired girl for neighboring families and as a seamstress for the Works Progress Administration program.

She married Vincent M. Karst at Hoven on Sept. 29, 1941. They farmed in the Wilmot and Peever area until 1944, when they moved to a farm near Bowdle. In 1977 they retired and moved into Hoven. Since July 1995, Eleanor had been living at the Holy Infant Hospital in Hoven. While living near Bowdle, she belonged to St. Augustine's Catholic Church and, while living in Hoven, belonged to St. Anthony's Catholic Church. She also was active in both churches' Altar Society. She and Vincent were both also active members of the Hoven Senior Citizens. Eleanor enjoyed crocheting and especially cherished time spent with her grandchildren.

Mrs. Karst is survived by two sons, Bill Karst and his wife, Elaine, of Bellevue, Idaho, and Robert Karst and his wife, Helen, of Aberdeen; one daughter, Betty Davis and her husband, Donald, of Ipswich; two brothers, Robert Baus of Tucson, Ariz., and Richard Baus and his wife, Carole, of Redfield; one sister, Mary Bitzer and her husband, Vincent, of Tolstoy; one daughter-in-law, Karen Karst of Bowdle; 12 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Family members preceding her in death include her father on April 3, 1958, her mother on Nov. 7, 1973, her husband on Aug. 8, 1995, one son (David), two brothers (Herman and Raymond), four sisters (Lena Hoven, Elizabeth, Margaret, and Beatrice Comeau).

Honorary pallbearers will be the nurses and staff at the Holy Infant Hospital. Casketbearers will be Dan Karst of Bellevue, Idaho, Doug Karst of Aberdeen, Tim Karst of Minneapolis, Minn., Jason Davis of Kansas City, Kan., Kelly Stevens of Faulkton, and Lance Stuwe of Ipswich. Miller Funeral Home, Bowdle, is in charge of arrangements.
