The son of James & Ann Elizabeth (Dorwart) Chambers, in 1860 he was a coach painter living with his family in Lancaster, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. He stoo d5' 10" tall and had dark hair and brown eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the stated age of twenty in Lancaster July 15, 1863, and mustered into federal service there July 21 as a private with Co. B, 79th Pennsylvania Infantry. According to the Pennsylvania Archives' ARIAS file, he was unassigned, but that is not reflected in his compiled military service records. On September 5, 1864, he transferred to the band of the 3rd Brigade, 1st Division, 14th Corps at the rank of musician, and honorably discharged with his company sometime during June 1865.

He married Cecelia Haag and fathered Emma (b. 02/27/65), James (b. 09/26/66), William (b. 06/28/75, d. 07/18/90), Daisy Irene (b. 02/24/78 - married Homer Christian Benner), John (b. 05/12/79), and Anna (b. 09/??/84); he died in Lancaster from "senile paralysis." No obituary was found in any online newspaper archive, and some online family trees list his middle name as "Harry."
