Dempsey was the second of nine children born to Robert Mellon and Bessie May (Harwell) Poplin. He married Addie Elizabeth Trull and they had one daughter: Hester Adeline.

Mr. Dempsey Boger Poplin, 81, died September 22, 1996 at Five Oaks Nursing Center, Concord.
Funeral is 2 p.m. Tuesday at Wilkinson Funeral Home Chapel, Concord with Rev. Neil McMillan officiating. Burial is in Mallard Creek Presbyterian Church cemetery. Visitation is 6:30-8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Retired from the U.S. Postal Service in Phoenix, AZ, Mr. Poplin also started Operation Santa Claus there. A counselor for many years with the Boy Scouts of America, he was also a WWII veteran and a member of Mallard Creek Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include his wife, Addie Trull Poplin of Charlotte; daughter, Hester P. Adams of Charlotte; brothers, Branson and Paul Poplin of Concord, J.E. Poplin of Harrisburg, Hugh Poplin of Kannapolis and Don and Gene Poplin of Charlotte; sisters, Inez Tucker of Harrisburg, Juanita Untz of Panama City, FL, Bonnie Sue Taylor of Concord and Brenda Garrison of Charlotte; granddaughter, Lisa A. Koll of Charlotte; grandson, John Wayne Adams, Jr. of James Island, SC; and great-granddaughter, Kirstie Elizabeth Koll of Charlotte.
Memorials may be made to Mallard Creek Presbyterian Church, Mallard Crk. Rd., Charlotte.
