Joseph was the son of Edward McGrath and his wife, Bertha Obenland. He was born on April 12, 1922 in Pomeroy, Washington. Joseph was the grandson of German immigrants Ernst and Mary Agnes Burkhart Obenland. This branch of the Obenland family had first lived in Illinois, then California, before settling permanetly in Pomeroy.

Joseph had a younger brother, Vincent John and a younger sister, Cecilia Ann.

During WWII, Joseph served in the United States Army Air Corps. He was a bombardier and a navigator. As the news article included in this memorial, Joseph was reported missing in action just before the end of the war in Europe. As of this date, we don't know the specifics of this fact.

On March 30, 1944, Joseph married Susan Pullen Keatts. The wedding took place at the Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Pomeroy.

In civilian life, Joseph worked for Standard Oil for many years. He worked in their Pendelton, Oregon, and Spokane and Seattle, Washington locations.

Joseph and Susan had no children.

Joseph passed away in Seattle on October 13, 2003 at the age of 81 years. A Find A Grave volunteer checked and double checked the cemetery in May, 2009 and could not find a marker for Joseph.
