John was the son of Edward James and Bertha Rose Obenland McGrath. He was born in Pomeroy, Washington on January 24, 1914. John had one sister, Cecilia Ann and one brother, Joseph.

John never married and had no children.

He was a member of the volunteer fire department in Pomeroy. In July of 1940, he received burns while fighting a grain fire at a local farm owned by Ray Gimlin. Those burns proved to be fatal. John passed away on July 25, 1940 in Pomeroy.
