Shortly after the birth of their first child in August 1940, Margaret contracted encephalitis. It took a few years to stabilize her condition but she was left paralyzed, only having the use of her arms and head.
Her mother looked after her until she was moved to Joan of Arc Home at St. Hubert near Whitewood, Saskatchewan in August 1945. When the home was closed late in 1963, she was transferred to Wascana Hospital in Regina. She lived there until her passing in 1989.
