He was a mariner, boatman, and seaman who married Margery Knight on Oct 10,1633 in Stepney, Co.Middlesex, England. He first settled in Weymouth MA in 1643, and he bought land in Braintree MA 19 Mar 1647/8. He drowned on May 10,1659, while at his daily work: operating the ferry between Braintree and Weymouth.

Children: John Hayward, Huldah Hayward Thayer, Samuel Hayward, Jonathan Hayward, and William Hayward Jr. The first two were baptised at Stepney, the rest were born in America. There may also have been a daughter Martha b.c1647 who later married Jeremiah Child, though this is unclear.
