CRULL LOSES LIFE IN RIVER

Elwood Man Seized with Cramps While Bathing and Boy Has Narrow Escape

Sad Ending of Picnic Party

Wachel Crull, 23, residing at 205 North Ninth Street was drowned yesterday afternoon at 3 o'clock at White River three miles east of Cicero.

Mr. Crull had driven to the river early yesterday with his wife and her mother Mrs. Carrie Hill, Mr. and Mrs. Schuyler Dean, Mr. and Mrs. Jean Price and Mrs. Nettie Cook and her 8 year old son Edgar.

In the afternoon Mr. Crull and the small Cook boy were in the water when he called to the boy to get on his back and he would teach him to swim. After several minutes, the pair got into a section of the river that is over eighteen feet deep, and it was here that mr. Crull was seized with an attack of the cramps.

Cicero Man Saved Boy

Without making outcry he sank immediately leaving the boy struggling at the surface. The boy had went under three times when Austin M. Fettig, of Cicero, who was rowing on the river with two companions leaped into the water and saved him. No effort was made to recover the body of Mr. Crull for two hours when divers attempted to locate the body which was finally recovered with grappling hooks. Dr. Hoppenrath from this city and a physician from Cicero had been summoned but no efforts at restoration could be effective after the body had remained in the water so long.

Clark's ambulance was summoned and brought the body to the Clark chapel where it was prepared for burial and later removed to the home of Mrs. Hill on Ninth St. where Mr. and Mrs. Crull resided.

Came Here a Year Ago

The deceased is survived by the wife Mrs Marie Crull, the parents Mr. and Mrs. Aaron Riley Crull of Omega, two brothers Paul and Roy both of near Omega, and three sisters Mrs. Hazel Shepard of this city, Mrs. Marie Musselman living south of town and Miss Mary Crull of Omega. Mr. Crull was born in Omega and lived there all his life until last year during which he was married and moved to this city, since which he has been employed at the shovel works.

Mr. Crull was a member of the brotherhood of Employees here and was a member of the Christian Church at Omega. Funeral services will be conducted in the Christian Church at that place on Tuesday afternoon at two o'clock after which the body will be brought back to the Elwood cemetery for burial.
