Anton Holzgen was a member of General Alfred Sully's 1864 expedition into northwestern Dakota Territory. In 1862, the Dakota Indians in Minnesota, frustrated by their situation for a number of reasons, went to war against the whites, killing hundreds. The 1864 expedition was in response to this, and in late July, Sully encountered a large Indian camp at Killdeer Mountain. Sully defeated the Indians during a battle on July 28, and, when moving back to the east, the force camped about seven miles east of Killdeer Mountain. The night of July 29, while on pickett duty, the Indians killed Holzgen and David LaPlante. These two non-cemetery burials are at that location. The inscription on Holzgen's gravestone reads "Anton Holzgen, Co. D, 2 Minn. Cav., 1845, 1864." Holzgen's story is related on pages 109 and 112 of "Dakota Uprising Victims: Gravestones & Stories," published in 2007 by Curtis Dahlin.
