He was born on June 7, 1929, son of the late Daniel Laben and Barbara Brittain Abernathy.
Joe was a lifelong member of McAdenville Baptist Church where he served as Church Clerk and was a choir member. He served in the US Air Force at Chanute Air Force Base, Illinois after graduating from Holbrook High School in Lowell, NC. He and his brothers were the owners of Abernathy's Supermarket in McAdenville for over 30 years.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Blanche May Abernathy; daughter and son in law, Elizabeth A. and Mike Craig of Gastonia; sons and daughters in law, Joseph Jr. and Janice Abernathy of Spencer Mountain, John & Dixie Abernathy of Belmont; sister and brother in law, Jane and Tom Melvin of Atlanta, Georgia; grandchildren, Daniel and Anna Craig, Jacob and Baylee Abernathy, Bill Monteith, Samuel, Rachel and Jordan Abernathy; many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, John Truett Abernathy and Labe Abernathy, Jr.; sisters, Bobbie Paul and Patsy Borneman.; and a half brother, Lonnie Abernathy.
A graveside service will be held at 2:00PM, Friday at Gaston Memorial Park with Pastors Dick Roberts and Matthew Genese officiating.
The family will receive friends Thursday from 6:00-8:00PM at McAdenville Baptist Church.
