John is the son of Elmore Callaway and Samantha Mariah Hodges, and the husband of Nancy Elizabeth Glisson. He 2nd married Debbie Bowen Summerlin (no children with Debbie).

John was an active member, deacon, and clerk for many years of the Anderson's Primitive Baptist Church, now known as "Old Anderson's". John was a successful farmer, sawmill and gristmill operator, and brick mason. He was always ready to lend a helping hand to his neighbors and community. He lived in the old 2-story house at the corner of Anderson Church Road and Sam Greene Road that later was the home of a daughter, Della, and her family.

John was born in an old log home of his parents near Cedar Creek in Tattnall Co., Ga. John and Nancy had 8 children, all born in Tattnall County, Ga. (The family did not live elsewhere, and the children were most likely born at home.) The children are:
1. Leona Martisha Callaway (b. 07 Nov 1872; d. 29 Aug 1916; Married 17 Jan 1895 to Virgil Jared Godbee)
2. Mary Frances Callaway (b. 17 Dec 1875; d. 10 Jun 1962; Married to Meldrim (Mellie) Sapp)
3. Mary Mollie Callaway (b. 17 Dec 1876; d. 04 Dec 1959; Married 1897 to John B. Kennedy)
4. Wealtha Missouri Callaway (b. 04 Aug 1879; d. 21 Jul 1941; Married to Shelton Franklin Sapp)
5. Margaret (Maggie) Samantha Callaway (b. 16 May 1882; d. 22 Jun 1958; Married 1911 to John Henry (Happy) Sikes)
6. Della Callaway (b. 02 Oct 1884; d. 04 Jan 1977 in Evans Co., Ga.; Married 05 Oct 1905 to Rufus Tillman Odum; Grandmother of this writer)
