SHE IS GONE: "CAULD, Cauld now those rosy lips, I aft had kissed sae fondly, And closed for aye, the sparkling glance, That dwelt on me sae kindly." At their home in Beaumont the 17th of this month of March, 1902, just as the sun was sinking below the western horizon, the vital spark went out from the mortal frame of Mrs. Martha Jane McGary, for forty three years the loved and loving wife of Daniel Leonidas McGary, editor of the Beaumont Age. Deceased was born of Kentucky parents – Mr. and Mrs. Samuel R. Summers in Washington County, Missouri, on the 25th of May, 1832. Had her life been a little longer spared, she would have reached the Palmists limit three score and ten. In 1859, newly wedded, she came overland with her husband from Nebraska to Texas, where she resided continuously until her death. Of seven children born of that union, four survive. They are Percy McGary, editor of The Cold Springs Sentinel; Samuel Hopkins McGary, editor and proprietor of The Beaumont Daily Journal; Mrs. Annie Statira Baker, wife of Eugene H. Baker, of Folson, New Mexico; and Mrs. Martha Vibella Foster, wife of Samuel W. Foster, of Beaumont. Surviving her are also two children by a former husband. They are Richard Lee Jackley, of Weatherford, and Mrs. Maggie Lemmon, of Fort Worth. Reared and living in the humble walks of life, deceased was contented with her own good and never envied the good that others had. Her heart was the abode of kindness, and, as opportunity and means allowed, to relieve suffering was her delight. For more than forty years, with her husband, in loving trust and tenderness, she had traveled along the journey of life. When two lives are so joined and interwoven, it is difficult to take one without leaving the other broken and bleeding. The loved ones left behind will cling to her memory, and loving hands will strew with flowers the turf that covers her grave. ~Beaumont Age
