Joseph King was born in Staunton, Illinois. He met a woman named Ida Keyser who he fell deeply in love with. As two love birds they decided to get married. At the time, he had been working for the railroad company. He unloaded the cargo of the trains. Once he had to stay in Granite City for sometime. They wrote letters to each other saying how much they missed each other and how much they wanted to see each other. Joe was thrilled to learn that Ida was pregnant. On February 10, 1914 while Ida was in Staunton, Joe was working on unloading barrels off the trains in Springfield. While unloading one, one of them was unhitched. It fell and crushed him. He was unconscious and was sent to St. John's Hospital, where he never regained consciousness and died. When Ida found out she was devastated. Two months later their daughter was born. In remembrance of her beloved husband, Joseph, she named her daughter Josephine. She never remarried.
