Obituary—Speer
Hand-dated 1909

Emeline Speer, daughter of James and Judith Battern, was born in Culpepper county, Va., October 15, 1830, and died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. E. L. Canaday in Greenville, January 26, 1909, at the age of 78 years, 3 months, and 11 days.

When about five years old, she removed with her parents to Preble county, Ohio, near Lewisburg, where they lived for about twelve years. She then came to Darke county, where she resided until her death. She was married to James M. Conaway about the year 1854, and to them were born five sons, three of whom survive their mother, Samuel Conaway of Arcanum, J. W. Conaway of Dayton, and J. A. Conaway of Bradford, O.

Her husband enlisted in the army during the civil war and while a soldier contracted disease from which he died before the close of the war. Left with five little boys she saw many hardships from the effects of the war.
In about the year 1868 she was married to Samuel R. Speer and to this union were born three daughters, one of whom preceeded the mother in death. Those remaining to mourn the death of their mother are Mrs. Jennie Canaday, of Greenville, with whom she has made her home for about five years, and Mrs. Rosa Lacy of Lynn, Ind. Her last husband died February 13th, 1901.

Mother Speer had for some years past been a sufferer with rheumatism and took her bed in November last, death coming to relieve her suffering during the shades of the night of January 26th.

About thirty-five years ago she was converted and united with the Coletown Christian Church where has ever since held her membership. She leaves besides many friends three sons, two daughters, twenty-four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and two sisters to mourn her departure.
