Burnell K. Wentz, of Hanover, entered into God's eternal care February 20, 2009.

Born in Adams County, he was the son of the late John F. and Cora E.M. (Kump) Wentz.

Mr. Wentz was a member of St. Bartholomew's United Church, ELCA, Hanover; the Harold H. Bair Post 14 American Legion in Hanover; The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6918, Harney, Md.; the United States Constabulary Association; the Hanover Republican Club; and the McSherrystown Home Association.

Burnell retired from the former Bethlehem Mines after 18 years of service. He served his country during World War II as a Technician fifth grade with Troop D 12th Constabulary Squadron, and after the war he served in the National Guard as a sergeant with Company E 104th Armored Calvary Regiment. For his efforts in World War II, he was awarded the Army of Occupation Medal and the World War II victory Medal.

Mr. Wentz was an avid Penn State football fan, loved to watch the Post 4 American Legion Baseball team of which he was a cofounder, enjoyed watching Darrell Waltrip race in NASCAR races, but he especially enjoyed visits with his great-granddaughter, Lauren, and her daughter, his great-great-granddaughter, Cierra.

Burnell was the loving husband of Dorothy M. (Reaver) Wentz, who died September 18, 2007 and is survived by his granddaughter, Sheryl L. Kuhn of Hanover; and one stepgrandson, Richard L. Crushong of Abbottstown.

He was preceded in death by five sisters, Mazie H. Becker, Mary Stuffle, Gertrude Warner, Lydia Feeser, and Emma Wentz, and five brothers, David J. Wentz, Paul Wentz, William Wentz, Irvin Wentz, and Clarence Wentz.

Interment was with military honors provided by the Hanover Allied Veterans Honor Guard.
