Horatio D. Winn, age 60 years, 5 months and 4 days, was found dead in a bath room at the Broad Street Hotel, Friday morning by Mrs. James R. Winn, the proprietor.
A physician who examined him was of the opinion that he had been dead for several hours. Although he had been suffering with light heart attacks for several years, he seemed to be enjoying unusually good health. Only the evening before he had attended services at the Church Street Primitive Baptist Church, of which he had been a faithful member for about 22 years. Mr. Winn had resided in Martinsville for the past 26 years, since the death of his wife, which occurred at Newport News, Va.
He was one of Martinsvilles most highly respected and esteemed citizens. For several years he was engaged in the mercantile business and later was a member of the police force for some time. At the time of his death he was serving the Martinsville district as a justice of the peace, an office of which he had entered the second term. He is survived by one son, H. Sterling Winn of Martinsville; one sister, Mrs. Sallie Eggleston, Bassett and three bothers, Thomas Winn of Roanoke; William Winn, Elon College, North Carolina, and Joe Winn of Philadelphia. A brother, James Winn of Axton, preceded him in death a little over three weeks ago. Mr. Winn had been making his home with his niece, Mrs. James R. Winn, since the death of his sister, Mrs. J. Harden Minter, seven years ago. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon from the Church Street Primitive Baptist Church. Interment was in Oakwood Cemetery, by the side of his wife. The pall bearers were nephews of the deceased, Mike Minter, J. H. Minter Jr., S. G. Lawing, Muscoe Winn, Daniel Lee Minter, Charlie Eggleston, Eulise Eggleston and Dick Warren. Among the out of town relatives who attended the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Winn, Mrs. Garland Miller, Mr. and Mrs. Logan, Mrs. Minnie Walker, Mrs. Ben Gravely, Mrs. William Riley Nunn, Claude Nunn, Henry Eggleston, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Eggleston, Mrs. Sallie Eggleston, Mrs. Bassett, Mrs. Lewther Martin, Mr. and Mrs. Eulise Eggleston, Bonnie Winn, Mrs. and Mrs. George Winn, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Gilly, Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Turner, Mrs. Jim Winn, Mr. and Mrs. H.
