Confederate States of America Army Veteran (1861-1865; American Civil War)
A Witness to the Aftermath of the Battle of Manassas (late-July of 1861)

From a letter he wrote to his cousin Robert McFaddin Montgomery:
"[I'm] here as you know in "Old Dominion", but [my] whereabouts is hard to say. I think [that] when the Atlas & Maps [were] made, these parts were entirely overlooked. We were put off [by the wagons] at a place called Manassas [, VA], near where they had the big fight, but there was nothing to be seen at the place except Batteries on every hill filled with cannon[s] ready for shooting, which would have given me "buck ague" instantly if I hadn't been so hungry. After satisfying my appetite & quieting my nerves, I walked out to the battlefield six miles [away] & you may say to Buck that when I searched it, there was only one thing that kept me from [making] a beeline for Black River, & that was I didn't know which way to run."
