"Wasco Tribune", July 16, 2014 -- Manuel O. Garcia (December 23, 1916 - July 8, 2014)

Manuel O. Garcia was born December 23, 1916 in Falfurrias, Texas to Antonia (Olivarez) and Esteban Garcia, one of 5 children. He lived and worked in Texas and Florida; then moved to and Arizona where he began his 18-year career for Jackson and Perkins in 1963. He was transferred to Wasco in 1969 where he continued his work as a mechanic for J & P until his retirement in 1981.

Manuel and Lydia Hernandez were married in Texas in February, 1941; and in May he began his service in the US Army during World War II. He was honorably discharged in January 1943 attaining the rank of Private. Manuel and Lydia were blessed with eight children, half of them settling in Arizona and the other half settling in Shafter and Wasco.

Manuel earned his life-time membership in The American Legion after his forty-year anniversary. Manuel liked to keep busy and he would barbeque, work in the yard, work on cars and he enjoyed carpentry.

Manuel was preceded in death by his wife Lydia in 1998; parents, Esteban and Antonia; 3 siblings; daughter, Maria Ybarra; and 1 granddaughter, Rachel. He is survived by his sons, Manuel Garcia, Pablo Garcia and Rene Garcia & wife Adella; daughters, Angelica & husband Andres Padilla, Alicia & husband Oscar Berrelez, Janie & husband Bob Hernandez and Rosemary Garcia; son-in-law, Serafin Ybarra; sister, Maria Garcia; 23 grandchildren, 34 great grandchildren and 11 great great grandchildren.

A chapel service will be held Sunday, July 13 at 6pm at Peters Funeral Home for Manuel O. Garcia, age 97, who passed away July 8, 2014 at his home in Wasco. A graveside service with military honors will be held Monday, July 14 at 9:30am at Wasco Memorial Park. Pastor Gabriel Espinoza of the El Buen Pastor Church will officiate and interment will follow. Visitation will be held Sunday, July 14 from 2pm to 8pm at Peters Funeral Home, Wasco.
