A biography of grandson, John J. Emmert gives the following account of Jacob and Mary Zimmerman:

"Mrs. [Susanna Zimmerman] Emmert our subject's mother, was born in Somerset, Somerset County, in 1794. Her father, Jacob Zimmerman, was a native of Hesse, Germany, and was one of the Hessian soldiers who were captured by General Washington, he being then only seventeen years old. He took the oath of allegiance and became a soldier in the American army, and was in camp at Valley Forge. He married a New England woman, Susannah Kissinger, who was of English descent, and after his marriage settled in Somerset county, Pennsylvania where he lived many years." (Hist./Biog. Rec. of Black Hawk Co., Iowa, publ. 1886, p. 451).

Descendants of the following children of Jacob and Mary claim Jacob was either of foreign birth, or born in Germany, specifically:

Conrad Zimmerman
Catharine Zimmerman Berkey,
John Zimmerman,
Susannah Zimmerman Emert,
Daniel Zimmerman.

Message from Diane Gravlee (47083760) dated 16 Mar 2022:
"Please remove the short paragraph about [Susanna Mary's] husband being the son of Sebastian Zimmerman in the bio for her. That has been proved incorrect. [Jacob Zimmerman born in Berks Co., PA] married Margaret Christ and moved to Columbia Co. PA. in 1794 and later to Schuylkill Co., PA., where he died. "

The following is the section Diane Gravlee requested that I delete. I am keeping it because I believe it is important to know the source of the Sebastian Zimmerman theory:

"Lawrence W. Jenkins, a descendant of Conrad, was persuaded, through his research, that Jacob was born in Berks Co., Pennsylvania, to Sebastian Zimmerman and Anna Elizabeth Levan."
............................
It was Mr. Jenkins who erected the headstones for Jacob and Mary Zimmerman, in April 1956. He stated in a letter to a fellow descendant (who gave me photocopies of all their correspondence): "Dear Joan, ... where Jacob Zimmerman came from and the reasons for making the decision that he is the correct one, read Sebastian's will closely and also the names of the children of Jacob and Mary. Mr. Heiple states that Jacob was a Hessian soldier, but one of Jacob Conrad [Zimmerman]'s sons, Harrison Conrad Zimmerman, used to tell me that there were three brothers in the Revolutionary war named Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Sebastian's family is the only one with these names and Jacob was a 2nd Lt. in the Berks County Militia and is recognized as such by the SAR. ...The account of the company [is] very vague. ... From the records at Berks County, it seems that the brothers were fighting among themselves as Abraham sold out and moved to Sckuylkill County and settled there in 1788 and Jacob sold out to Baltzer Gehr on a quit claim in 1793 and ended up in Somerset County where he made his last home. Names in the family seem to show that the name LeVan was used in the family of Elizabeth and David Ash. Anna Elizabeth LeVan was the wife of Sebastian and Jacob was entrusted with her well being after the death of Sebastian and this may have led to some of the animosity in the family."

This (the above) is the proof connecting Jacob to Sebastian and identifying his service in the 5th Company, 2nd Battalion of the Berks county Militia.
