Grew up in Somerset Twp., Somerset Co., Pennsylvania. His name does not appear on the vendee list of his father's probate, and had likely moved by then (filed 9 July 1835). Moved to Ohio, then to Indiana.

Daniel's father's probate record of Sept. 19, 1854 states that Daniel had sold his portion of his land inheritance to John Emmert. His brother, John, who also had moved west, sold his portion to Jacob C. Zimmerman.

In Oct., 1850, Daniel and his son, Joel, were living in DeKalb Co., Indiana, with his sister (David & Elizabeth Zimmerman Ash family).

In Oct., 1850, Daniel Zimmerman and wife Julia Ann (McQuilling) sold an 80 acre parcel of land in DeKalb Co., Indiana to their son, Joel Zimmerman, for $400. Daniel signed the deed in DeKalb Co., Indiana. His wife, Julia Ann, signed in Fulton Co., Ohio. (DeKalb Co Deeds, Book F, p. 272)

In Mar., 1851, wife, Julia Ann Zimmerman was named as an heir to her brother James McQuilling: "Julia Ann Zimmerman intermarried with Daniel Zimmerman". (Fulton Co., Ohio Chancery Records, Vol 1 p. 75-80)

Feb. 29, 1857, Daniel Zimmerman petitioned for divorce from Julia Zimmerman. (Auburn, DeKalb Co., Indiana Clerk's Office, No. 1007-A)
