He was preceded in death by his parents, Bessie and Acie Askins. He was retired from the U.S. Army and was a Mason.
He is survived by his wife, Frances; daughters, Sylvia "Teddy" Jacobs, Angie (Mike) Lee; son, James G. (Angelia) Askins Jr.; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; sisters, Doris Douglas, Barbara Langwasser; many nieces and nephews; and many friends.
Funeral services will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday at Heritage Funeral Home Chapel with Wayne Roach officiating. Interment will follow in Chattanooga National Cemetery with full military honors.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, Tn. 38105-1942.
