Sarah Arena Gorden Williams Rude Carr was born in March of 1860 in Dane County, Wisconsin, the daughter of Andrew and Bertha (Saevre) Gorden, Norwegian immigrants. By her 8th birthday she was living with maternal relatives on their farm in Northwood, Iowa.
On 22 Oct 1878, Sarah married her first husband, Norwegian-born Louis A. Williams. Sarah's family had owned a saloon in the area, and Louis was a saloonkeeper by trade - this may well be how he and Sarah met. In 1880, their son Almer Victor ("A. V.") was born; in 1890 they had a daughter, Estella ("Stella"). The pair were separated by 1900, though they reconciled for a time and appear together again in the 1905 census. However, at the time of Louis' suicide in 1907, he was married to someone else.
For many years, Sarah did not remarry. For a time, she co-owned the Narveson and Williams Millinery in Albert Lea, Minnesota with Caroline Narveson; she appears to have bought in as a partner after Caroline owned it alone for several years. From 1900 to 1913, Sarah lived comfortably, traveling often between Albert Lea, Minneapolis, and Northwood, Iowa, for business as well as pleasure. However, contemporary newspaper articles indicate the business was liquidated by 1913. This downturn of fortunes may have spurred Sarah to look for a spouse again after many years of independence. (By the time she married her third husband, in her mid-60s, Sarah was working as a maid.)
Sarah married her second husband Erick E Rude on 15 July 1916 in Minneapolis. A widower with three young children, Erick died 7 years later, on 14 May 1923.
Sarah's final husband was George Washington ("G. W.") Carr; they married in Spokane, Washington on 14 Apr 1924. Like Erick, G. W. was a widower, though his children were grown. Sarah and G. W. lived out their final 16 years together and died within two months of one another in 1940.
Tragically, Sarah's only daughter Stella died in 1921 at the age of 31; Stella's daughter Lucille died in 1927 at age 18, shortly after marrying and becoming a mother. Sarah outlived them both by many years. She did take comfort in a close relationship with her son A. V., who outlived her, became a success as a newspaper publisher, and gave her three grandchildren.
