George Washington Carr was born in Dubuque, Iowa to Joseph Raoul and Sarah (Altman) Carr. With his first wife, the former Adline P Cooper, G. W. had 3 sons who lived to adulthood, and an infant daughter Minnie who passed in 1874. Adline died in 1879.

G. W. married his second wife, the former Bessie Ann Barber, in 1880, and they had a son and a daughter. (The son, Dannie, died at age 10 in 1905.)

After Bessie's death in 1923, G. W. married a final time, to the former Sarah Arena Gorden. Like G. W, she had been previously married. The pair lived out their final 16 years together in Spangle, Washington, dying within two months of one another in 1940.
