From a letter written by James French Hoyt, son of James & Beulah Sabin Hoyt, to his sister Mary, Aug. 31, 1879 posted from West Nortenburg, Lewis Co., NY:

"It has been rather dry...Pastures are short so that dairymen have had to feed hay and corn to their cows. Grasshoppers are plentiful...Butter is worth from 8 to 12 cents a pound, cheese has been getting 4 1/2 cents to 6 cents, eggs...11 cents per dozen, flour $1.45, for the best corn meal $1.05 per 100 pounds."-----

The family moved westward and witnessed the early growth of the Church, including the rise of Nauvoo, the expulsion of the Saints from Illinois, and their tragic move across Iowa to Mt. Pisgah, Garden Grove and Winter Quarters.
