In March of 1912, he suffered a traumatic amputation of his right foot when a locomotive boiler exploded in the worst incident of its kind in U.S. history. During his hospital recovery he met and later married a nineteen year old nurse, Julia Ellen Cox. A few years later, he attended the Palmer School of Chiropractic Medicine in Davenport, Iowa. After graduation, he practiced, until his death, in south Texas.
