Beloved husband and father, he was a lifelong resident of the Daytona Beach area, moving here at the age of four from his birthplace of Statesboro, Georgia.
He was preceded in death by his wife of fifty years, Anna Mae Converse Akins earlier this year.
Mr. Akins loved racing his motorcycle on the broad, white sands of Daytona in the '30's and '40's. He attended Seabreeze High School (class of 1938) with and later raced motorcycles for Bill France well before Daytona International Speedway became a reality. Before and after World War II, he traveled up and down the east coast racing on dirt tracks and sand and winning a few races here and there.
Later he turned his attention to real estate, which became his lifelong career. As a realtor, he was active for many years in the local Board of Realtors and knew Daytona like the back of his hand.
Mr. Akins is survived by his four daughters, June Van Valkenburg and husband, Steve of Goodyear, AZ; Bonnie Hutchinson of Suwanee, GA; April Peavy and husband, Bobby of Suwanee, GA; Laura Curtis and husband, Ron of Duluth, GA; his grandchildren, Elizabeth, Luke, Emily, Ronald and Natalie; and his nieces, Linda Stewart of Ormond Beach, FL, and Sherrill Jones of Tallahassee, FL.
A private family memorial service will be held at Daytona Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family invites a donation to the Hospice of Volusia/Flagler on behalf of Mr. Akins and his wife, Anna.
