Anna Akins, 69, of Ormond Beach, passed away February 19, 2008, after a long battle with cancer. The family will appreciate the comfort of friends during visitation from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. today (Thursday, February 21), and again from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Friday, February 22, followed by funeral services at 11 a.m. at Lohman Funeral Home, 733 W. Granada Blvd., Ormond Beach. Interment to follow at Daytona Memorial Park. Anna was born in Daytona Beach, the area where she lived most of her life. She attended Holly Hill Elementary, Mainland High School and the University of South Carolina. After retiring from 27 years as a claims representative with the local Social Security office, she became very active in tennis. Anna was a devoted mother while working a full-time job, performing volunteer duties and always available to lend support to friends. Most recently, Anna served as co-chairman for her high school (MHS Class of 1956) 50th reunion. Her hobbies were travel, gourmet foods, tennis gardening and music; she also enjoyed her weekly Scrabble match with her best friend of 60 years, Deanie Lowe. Anna is survived by her husband of 50 years, Wallace Akins; along with her sisters, Dixie (Dick) Wade and Lylah Gillespie; daughters, Bonnie Hutchinson, April (Bobby) Peavy and Laura (Ron) Curtis; stepdaughter, June (Steve) VanValkenburg; and grandchildren, Elizabeth, Luke, Emily, Ronald and Natalie. In lieu of other expression of condolences, the family requests memorial donations be sent to Hospice of Volusia/Flagler, 3800 Woodbriar Trail, Port Orange, FL 32124 or the American Cancer Society, 1620 Clyde Morris Blvd, Suite 300, Daytona Beach, FL 32119.
