Service Is Held Here Sunday For Pioneer Woman
Funeral services for Mrs. John Powers were held at 2 p.m. Sunday afternoon in the First Baptist Church with Rev. J.B. Shinn, pastor, officiating. Rev. Hugh Willoby, Alfalfa Baptist pastor, assisted. Burial was in the Alfalfa cemetery.
Mrs. Powers, a pioneer resident of Carnegie and community, had been in ill health for several years. She had become critical about a week before her death Friday morning.
Sarah Ann Cobb was born November 14, 1877, in Lillie, Ky. She was married to John Powers on December 27, 1891. Eight children were born to them, two preceding her in death. She and her husband and family came to the farm, five miles north and a mile and a half east of Carnegie, many years ago. Upon retiring from the farm, Mr. and Mrs. Powers moved to their present home on North Broadway. She was a member of the Baptist church.
Her survivors include; her husband of the home; four daughters, Mrs. Anna Terrell of Oklahoma City, Mrs. Bertha Terrell, Mrs. Bessie Pike and Mrs. Horace Cotten, all of Carnegie; two sons, James D. Powers of Butler, Okla., and Johnnie Powers of Chickasha ; one step-daughter, Mrs. Laura Dunning of Porterville, Calif.; 23 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
Also surviving are three brothers, Frank, Steve and Huey Cobb, and one sister, Mrs. Ida Eaton, all of Corbin, Ky.
