Vannie Cain was the daughter of Eva Iris Cain and Henry Fleetwood. The two never got married and had split by the time of Vannie's birth which is why Eva gave her the last name Cain.

In 1910, she was listed as Vannie Fleetwood and was living in Polk, Monroe County, Indiana. She is registered with her stepfather at the time, John Hushour, her mother, Eva Hushour, and her brother, Charles Ray Fleetwood.

On June 6, 1916, Vannie passed away. Her presumed cause of death was diphtheria. At the time of her death, she was living with her stepfather Marion Rogers, her mother Eva Rogers, and her siblings Charles Ray Fleetwood, Gayle Rogers, and Avnell Rogers. Her brother was always at her side and tried his best to take care of her. As described by Eva later in her life, it hurt him deeply to lose Vannie. While he tried to take care of his other siblings, Gayle and Avnell, he took Vannie's death the hardest, as he was the closest with her.

While Vannie's stone is in Burgoon Cemetery, she is actually buried with her siblings Gayle, Avnell, and Leslie Opal in Friendship Cemetery. The four children are not marked in Friendship. At the time of their death's the family could not afford to get the children permanent stones and chose to put in temporary ones. Later in life, their living siblings, Charles Ray Fleetwood, James William Rogers, Wilmer Warren Rogers, Forest Wayne Rogers, Clovis Wesley Rogers, Robert Max Rogers, Ruth Rogers, and Richard Rogers all pitched in money to buy the children permanent stones. However, the kids did not know where their siblings were buried in Friendship Cemetery, so they chose to put them in the closest available lot in Burgoon next to Eva and Marion. This is also why the birth date on the stone is incorrect.

Vannie's passing left a hole in the family's heart, one that could not be repaired. But her family kept her memory alive by telling their kids, grandkids, and even great-grandkids about how amazing of a girl she was. Vannie will always be remembered as a strong little girl, an amazing sister, and will always be loved.
