OSAGE CITY -- Dr. Paul D. Adams, 75, Osage City, died Tuesday, Jan. 19, 1999, at his home.

Dr. Adams had a family practice in Osage City from September 1949 until he retired in September 1985. He also had served as district coroner more than 45 years before he retired in 1997. He served in the Air Force from 1955 to 1956 as chief of professional services at Smoky Hills Air Force Base in Salina.

He was born May 1, 1923, at Clay Center, the son of Glenn and Elizabeth Osenbaugh Adams.

He was graduated from Clay County Community High School and the University of Kansas. He was graduated from the University of Kansas Medical Center in 1947 and served a rotating internship at Wesley Hospital in Wichita in 1947 and 1948, and a pathology residency at St. Francis Hospital in Peoria, Ill., in 1948 and 1949.

Dr. Adams was elected to the State Board of Education in 1986 and served until 1994. He also served two terms on the Osage City school board, and one term each on the grade school board and the Unified School District No. 420 board. He was on the Osage City city council for 10 years.

Dr. Adams also was on the board of trustees for the University of Kansas Endowment Association for 30 years and active in the KU Alumni Association, Kansas Honors Program and the advisory board for the KU Fine Arts Department.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church where he served 30 years as choir director, a 25-year member of Kiwanis Club and past district lieutenant governor. And he was a member and past president of the Osage City Country Club.

He was married to Maurine Waterstradt on June 24, 1945, in Lawrence. She survives.

Other survivors include three daughters, Carol Ann Brown, Alexandria, Va., Gwen Adams, Palo Alto, Calif., and Dr. Susan Adams, Kirkwood, Mo.; two sisters, Bernice Jupe, Carlotta, Calif., and Leora DeFord, Glenview, Ill.; five brothers, Ralph Adams, Sun City West, Ariz., Roger Adams, Hinsdale, Ill., William Adams, Fort Worth, Texas, Dr. Dwight Adams, Osage City, and Nolan Adams, Denver; and two grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church in Osage City.

Burial will be at the Osage City Cemetery.

Dr. Adams will lie in state from 3 to 8 p.m. today at the Crable Funeral Chapel in Osage City where relatives and friends will meet from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Osage City United Methodist Church, the Osage City Library Foundation or to the University of Kansas Endowment Association and sent in care of the funeral chapel.
