Born eighty five years ago in Dodge City, Kansas on October 4th, 1923 to the late Roland and Edna (Bealmear) West as the seventh daughter of thirteen children, she was raised and educated in Dodge City, Kansas. Ruth is a member of the Dodge City High School's graduating "Class of 1942". She moved to the San Francisco Bay area shortly following her high school graduation.
As an employee of Lucky Stores a small disagreement with a handsome young pharmacist named Willard "Van" Van Gilder, whom she would not let through the doors to go to work led to a loving relationship and to their eventual marriage in 1943. Ruth joins in her eternal home her husband; "Van" who died in 1963, son; Bill and grandson Billy, both whom she lost in 1993, daughter; Barbara who passed from this life in 2001 along with twelve of her siblings.
