David amd his birth family moved from Virginia to Stark County, Illinois in 1830. David married Nancy Emily Howard Wilkinson in Stark County in 1843. There children were Charles Howard, twins of Mary Adeline and Sarah Angeline, George Webster, twins of Leonidas James and Saffronah Jane,
Jesse Truman, Walter Allen, Lucy Ann and Laura Jane. Five children died at a young age. The family moved to Johnson County and Marshall County, Iowa. In May of 1864, the family made the trek to Oregon arriving in October of the same year with the Howard Wagon Train. They moved on to Tehama County, California. Nancy died in 1871. David and 4 of his 5 living children moved to Modoc County, California. David lived on his farm or ranch at what was called Clover Swale-later called the SX Ranch located about 10 miles west of Alturas. David was buried 1st at Canby Cemetery. His eldest son, Charles Howard Essex, fenced off a corner of the ranch and David's body was moved to this new burial place. The father of Theodore Renner was buried here, too. Later a wheel line was put in for irrigation and David's gravestone was removed but David's remains remain there in 2008.
