Eleanor Essex, daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Essex, was born near Little York, Albemarle County, Virginia, Dec. 29, 1811; died Jan. 14, 1894, aged 82 years and 15 days.
She was married to David Cooper at the age of 17. With her father and mother, they emigrated to Illinois, arriving her late in the fall of 1830, locating three miles southwest of Wyoming. Their eight children were born there, five of whom are living. Four of them were present at her funeral; one daughter, living in Iowa was not able to be here. David Cooper dying August 29, 1860, she was married to Francis W. Ennis August 11, 1864, who died in August, 1889.
Coming to this country at such an early date, she went through all the hardships which early settlers experienced. They arrived here too late in the fall to build a cabin, and she slept in a covered wagon all through the winter, which was noted as “the deep snow winter”. During the Black Hawk War, all the family excepting Mr. Cooper, who served in the war, went to Fort Clark, near Peoria, for protection. Over forty years ago, she joined the Free Will Baptist Church in Knox County.
Funeral services were held at her late residence on Wednesday, Jan. 17, at 10 am, conducted by Rev. WT Kerr, assisted by Revs. Jordan and Walters.
The family wish to express their thanks and their appreciation of the help given by the neighbors.
