1st Sergeant, Company D, 7th Tennessee Cavalry, enlisted for 1 year in Carroll Co, TN on 8/4/62 and mustered at Trenton, TN on 9/24/62. He furnished his own horse and equipment. Hampton was captured and paroled at the battle of Trenton, TN on 12/20/62. He completed his one year enlistment and mustered out at Saulsbury, TN on 10/25/63.

Enlisting again, this time in Co K, 2nd TN Mounted Infantry, Hampton mustered in at Waverly Landing, TN on 3/29/64, and at Nashville, TN on 6/27/64, eventually becoming captain of Co K. He mustered out at Nashville, June 27, 1865. He applied for an invalid pension in 1890 from Arkansas. His wife, Rebecca Umstead Hampton received a widow's pension in Texas.
