Born into slavery with parents Nancy (Green) and Miles Reeves, Sally moved to Wright County Missouri as a young married woman. She and Thomas began with a small farm and expanded it to 240 acres. They had 14 children.

In their upper years, the couple sold their farm and moved to the town of Hartville, but a tragic house fire started there from an overturned lamp. Sally had 2nd degree burns on her face, back, and arms; the home was destroyed. A son took them to his house in Springfield where Sally soon died from these injuries.
