Mrs. Bertha Adams, 86, longtime Lakin resident and county official, died last Friday morning at the Kearny County hospital after a short illness.
Mrs. Adams was clerk of the district court from 1943 until her retirement in January of 1967 at the age of 82. She served 12 full terms in office during the tenure of four elected district judges and several others appointed for short terms.
Bertha, daughter of Abraham and Louisa Roberts, was born at Mount Ayr, IA, February 7, 1885, and departed this life October 15, 1971, at Lakin, Kansas, at the age of 86 years, 8 months and seven days. She was the last surviving member of the seven children of the Roberts.
She was united in marriage to Chester S. Adams in Mount Ayr Methodist church on February 24, 1904. He preceded her in death September 27, 1937. To this union four children were born.
The family made their home in Ringold County, IA, until 1931 when they moved to Lakin.
Bertha was a member of the Presbyterian church, the VFW Auxiliary and Rebekah Lodge.
Mrs. Adams was a popular and pleasant figure around the courthouse for almost a quarter of a century. A Democrat, she was always one of the most popular vote getters on the county ballot. She served during the terms of District Judges Fred Evans, Ray Calihan, Sr., Roland Tate, and Bert Vance, as well as appointive pro-tem jurists.
Bertha filled her position as clerk of the court with dignity, efficiency and kindliness. Always faithful in her duty it was with regret that her fellow workers heard her say on her 81st birthday that she would retire at the end of the term in January, 1967.
Since that time she has maintained a lively interest in her hobbies of crocheting, quilt piecing and gardening, as well as her church and auxiliary work.
Survivors include three sons, Raymond and Clarence, both of Lakin, and Vern of Ontario, Calif.; a daughter, Mrs. Cleo Fouser, Lakin; eight grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren.
