Bessie N. Barto was born July 23, 1914, in Norman to Alpheus Cryenus and Theodocia Teel Howery Barto. She grew up in the Noble and Norman area and graduated from Norman High School.

Bessie married Roy Davenport on June 24, 1936, in Norman, Cleveland County, Oklahoma. They had two children, both sons.

Bessie loved taking care of her family and enjoyed participating in the Hopewell Home Demonstration Club. She also took a job outside the home working as a seamstress at Griffin Memorial Hospital.

When Roy retired in 1978, He and Bessie moved to Bridgeview at Lake Texoma, Oklahoma. After five years, they moved back to Norman and to the old Barto family farm, southeast of Norman. She enjoyed gardening, sewing for her granddaughters and herself and spending time with family.

Mrs. Davenport was active in Immanuel Baptist Church, serving as a Sunday school teacher and a member of the Women's Missionary Union for many years. She was also a charter member of Alameda Baptist Church.

Bessie was 89 when she died Friday, August 29, in Noble, Cleveland County, Oklahoma. Funeral services were held Tuesday at the Immanuel Baptist Church in Norman with the Rev. Richard Stephens officiating. Burial was at Independence Cemetery, Norman, Cleveland County, Oklahoma.
