Monte McCalla, Former Bicycle Racer, Is Dead

Monte J. "Mickey" McCalla, onetime bicycle racer here, died Wednesday morning in his home, 1414 1/2 NW 25. He was 67.

Forrest Taylor, 1225 NW 27, Wednesday night recalled some of the exciting bicycle races in which he and McCalla rode. It was in 1904 that McCalla first began racing at the old fairgrounds track, where the Farmers Public market now stands.

"He was a dark horse," Taylor remembered. "No one knew who he was or that he could ride. He rode off and left the field like all the others were tied down. He had strength in his legs."

Taylor said McCalla was the second fastest man on a bicycle in Oklahoma in 1904 and 1905. He was beaten only by Worth Mitten, then state champion.

McCalla gave up bike racing after six years. He then bought one of the first motorcycles in Oklahoma City. He was a charter member of the city's first motorcycle club.

McCalla came to Oklahoma City in 1903 from Kansas. He was a plaster contractor here before his retirement.

During the Spanish-American war, he served with a Kansas infantry group in the Philippines. McCalla had been ill for a year with a stomach cancer. "Up to the moment he died," Taylor said, "he didn't know what was wrong with him. None of his friends would tell him."

Always active, McCalla was an ardent hunter and angler. Taylor said he often saw McCalla shoot pop bottle caps on the fly with a rifle.

"Only four years ago," Taylor recalled, "I saw Mickey on ice skates out at Shepherd's lake. He could cut figure eights with the best of them then."

Services will be be at 3 p. m. Thursday in Smith & Kernke funeral home with burial in Fairlawn cemetery. McCalla has no known relatives surviving.
