John, age 19, enlisted in the Confederate States Army on 12 September 1861 at Charleston, South Carolina. He was mustered as a Private in Capt. C.E. Chichester's Company, 1st Regiment Rifles (Branch's Rifle Regiment), South Carolina Militia. On 20 February 1862 at Adams Run, South Carolina he enlisted, age 19, as a Private in Capt. Walter's Company, South Carolina Light Artillery also known as Washington's Artillery. John served until the end of the war when he was paroled at Greensboro, North Carolina with Gen. Joseph E. Johnston on 28 April 1865. He served with his cousins in Washington's Light Artillery Regiment: Frederick Wunderman Eason who became a pastor and Thomas Dotterer Eason, who was a Lieutenant.

John applied for a Confederate Pension, living in Chatham County, Georgia, in 1912 and was approved from 1913 until his death on 22 August 1924. His wife, applied for Widow Pension based on his service 12 November 1924. She died on 22 December 1924 before pension was approved.
