Florence A. Buker was born 9 Sep 1880 in Benton, Maine, to Charles Elbridge Buker, a laborer and farmer who went by his middle name of Elbridge, and his wife Lois Jane (Spaulding) Buker; she was the second of their eight children.

At fifteen, she married a farmer, George Melvin Buzzell, also of Benton, and the couple settled in Benton. It was the first marriage for each of them. Her husband was 24, known by his middle name of Melvin, and they went on to have six children together. Sadly, their third child, son Parker Melvin Buzzell, was sickly from birth and passed away, only eleven days old; he rests in a plot in Brown Cemetery, where his parents would eventually join him. By the 1920 US Census, the family has moved to Fairfield, ME, and the oldest two daughters had married and given them grandchildren.

By 1929, Florence and her husband were living in Waterville, ME, renting at 16 1/2 Alden Street. Her husband died at home later that year, and by 1930 Florence was working as a cook in a restaurant. Her four youngest surviving children lived with her, along with her oldest grandchild. By 1932 she was a cook at Dunlap's Lunch.

On 18 Dec 1937, at age 57, Florence married widower Danforth Crowell Otis, 70, at Getchell Street Baptist Church. They continued to reside in Waterville, at 20 Ash Street, until his death in 1948.

Florence wed again, at age 70, to widower Walter Philip Small in October 1950, at the Getchell Street Baptist Church parsonage. They lived at 3 Myrtle Street until her death on 31 Aug 1959 at 78.

Her obituary noted her as a resident of Waterville for 34 years. In addition to her husband, survivors included two sons, Derwood Buzzell of North Vassalboro, Basil Buzzell of Oakland; three daughters, Mrs Pearl Whitten of Waterville, Mrs Iris Gibbs of Fairfield, and Mrs. Martha Bragg Foley of Waltham, MA; a brother Henry Buker and a sister Mrs Evelyn Brown, both of Benton; plus several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, neices and nephews.

Her funeral service was held at the Advent Christian Church, with burial in Brown Cemetery in Benton, ME.

Her middle name is Alma per the US SS Applications & Claims Index, but it is listed as Alice in both her wedding announcement to Walter P. Small, and her obituary.
