William's parents moved to Collin County, Texas by 1860, thus avoiding many of the heartaches Jackson County, Missouri families endured during the Civil War. His wife Virginia Taylor's family wasn't as lucky. She and other women in her family were arrested and removed from the area, along with the children - their homes burned. Their contacts in Texas would become hiding places for many Confederate families until after the war.

April 1864: William enlisted in Company K, 2nd Regiment, General Shelby's Brigade, Missouri Cavalry in Arkansas.

August 6, 1868: William married Virginia L. Taylor in Jackson County, Missouri. They had first two sons, Robert E Lee Hall and John Thomas Hall there, burying little John in 1873 in the Taylor family cemetery that was later donated to the community. The couple moved to Texas and had Mary Frances, William Asa, and Lizzie Hall. Virginia and Lizzie died about 1882 and are buried at Gibson Cemetery in Mansfield.

April 14, 1883: William married Frances Ann McPherson in Tarrant County, Texas. They were the parents of Jesse James, Rufus R., Max Florence, Susan Beatrice, Ida Mae, and David Crockett Hall.

September 1, 1913: Approved for Confederate Soldier Pension.

The January 1920 Census shows him as being divorced and living with his single son William Asa, but Frances Ann did apply for his Veteran's Pension after he died later that year and stated they had never divorced.
