Helen Louise Thompson Yates, 80, passed away on Wednesday September 21, 2005 at her home on Dogwood Drive in Hazlehurst. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Stringer Family Funeral Services in Hazlehurst and 1-2 p.m. Friday at First Baptist Church of Hazlehurst. Services will be 2 p.m. Friday in the chapel of First Baptist Church, Hazlehurst with her longtime pastor, Dr. Robert Hanvey officiating. Internment will follow the service at the Hazlehurst Cemetery.

Born April 13, 1925, Mrs. Yates was a lifelong resident of Hazlehurst - retiring after 40 years of service to the Merchants and Planters Bank. An active, lifelong member of the First Baptist Church, she served her church in many capacities from Sunday School teacher to pianist. Mrs. Yates was likewise very active in her community, participating in the work of organizations such as the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Hazlehurst Garden Club. She was avidly artistic in having been honored with a number of awards for her creative floral arranging as well as having been remembered for her masterful needlework.

Mrs. Yates was preceded in death by her parents, St. Clair and Gertrude Thompson Yates of Hazlehurst and by her brother, St. Clair Thompson, Jr. of Crystal Springs.

She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Julienne "Jigger" Yates; her sister, Mrs. Martha Thompson Hennington of Crystal Springs, as well as hosts of nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to thank the physicians who so kindly cared for Mrs. Yates during her long illness: Dr. Randy Hankins, Dr. Fred McDonnell, and Dr. Robert Walker.

Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Hazlehurst.
