He was born March 30, 1922, in Cottageville, a son of the late Thomas Edison and Minerva Florence Sayre. His wife, Frankie Marie Sayre, also preceded him in death.
He was a World War II United States Navy veteran and participated in five invasions in the Mediterranean area and Normandy. Following the war, he was a guard at the West Virginia State Penitentiary for five years. He later became a sheet metal worker for Union Carbide and retired after 25 years of service. He was a longtime member of the Cross Lanes Bible Church, and he was involved with the American Legion.
Survivors include his children, Dan Thomas Sayre of Salem, Ore., and Donna Sayre Neumann of Greenville, S.C.; brothers, Quentin Sayre of Ripley, and Ralph Sayre of St. Albans; sister, Ada Ruth Sayre of Charleston; two grandchildren, Isaiah Neumann and Nathanael Neumann; a nephew, Robert Sayre; and a dear friend, Judy McLaughlin.
Service will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, January 21, 2009, at Cooke Funeral Home, Nitro, with Pastor Mark Boyd officiating. Burial will follow in the Blaine Memorial Cemetery, Cottageville, with military honors provided by the Jackson County Veteran's organizations. Visitation will be from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, and one hour prior to service time on Wednesday.
In lieu of flowers, donations are preferred and can be sent to Cross Lanes Christian School, 5330 Floradale Drive, Cross Lanes, WV 25313.
