Lafayette "Fate" David Kindred

"Fate' Kindred - City's Earliest Resident Dead", obituary, McIntosh County Democrat (Checotah,OK), 15 August 1946, pg 1 col 2

Fate Kindred, 94 years old, the first white man to set foot on the present site of Checotah died at his home near here Tuesday after a short illness.
Funeral services were held at the Baptist church at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon with Rev. E.A. Spiller officiating. Burial was in Triplett Cemetery near Texanna.
Lafayette D. Kindred, familiarly known as "Uncle Fate" was born in Georgia in 1852 [sic]. He vividly recalled the invasion of the south by the Yankees and tears would come to his eyes as he related the horrors of the war between the states.
Uncle Fate came to Indian Territory in 1879 and lived secluded among the Indians. When the Katy Railroad started laying track through the Indian nation in 1872 young Kindred, who was then 19 years old, hired out as a railroad hand. He swore that he helped to build the Katy railroad through Checotah, 75 years ago.
Kindred was personally acquainted with Belle Starr and told many exciting tales about the woman bandit who had her hideout in Belle Starr Canyon only a short distance from the proposed dam on the Canadian river. Miss Starr furnished refuge for outlaws at a price. The only entrance to the canyon was up the creek bed which was easily guarded. U.S. Marshals who ventured into the area were usually found dead, Uncle Fate recalled.
Belle Starr was killed by an old Indian settler who had a personal grudge against her.
Uncle Fate engaged in the cattle and farming business in later years. He claimed that he was never sick a day in his life, but in recent months admitted he was weaker and that his eyesight was failing.
Survivors include three sons, S.H. Kindred and J.B. Kindred both of Checotah and J.C. Noble of Illinois; three daughters, Mrs. Mary Brandon, Mrs. Ella Mackey and Mrs. Nellie Parks, all of Checotah.
